SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said one of its officers was arrested and charged with family assault on Thursday afternoon.
The department said Ruben Vasquez, 52, was taken into custody by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday for an incident that happened while he was off duty on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Deputies told KSAT they were dispatched on an assault call to Vasquez’s home around 9:45 a.m. Thursday in the 8900 block of Highland Gate in far northwest Bexar County.
The victim told deputies that she and Vasquez were in a verbal argument before it turned physical.
The family member told BCSO that Vasquez “raised his arm up with a fist and began to close distance” on the victim. In response, she said she pushed Vasquez off to create distance between him and her.
Vasquez responded to the woman’s push by pushing her with both hands, causing her to fall to the floor and suffer some lower back pain, deputies said in their report.
SAPD said Vasquez, a 24-year department veteran, was charged with assault with bodily injury against a family member, which is considered a misdemeanor. He was later booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on Thursday.
Police said Vasquez has since been placed on administrative duty.
Bexar County deputies will handle the criminal investigation into this case while SAPD said it will conduct an administrative investigation into the incident.
