SAN ANTONIO – A newborn baby was rushed to a hospital in critical condition after a man found the infant on a sidewalk early Tuesday morning, according to San Antonio police.
The man found the baby around 3 a.m. on Tuesday near Nolan and Cherry Street, police said.
Snow was already falling when the baby was found, according to the KSAT Weather Authority Team. The temperature outside was 27 degrees Fahrenheit, but the wind chill made it feel like 16 degrees.
According to police, the baby was inside of a basket wrapped in a towel. The infant was breathing weakly and still had the umbilical cord attached, SAPD said.
The man took the baby to the 400 block of Commerce Street, and first responders transported the baby to a hospital in critical condition.
SAPD officials said on Wednesday that two women involved in the case are being questioned. No charges have been filed yet.
If you cannot care for a newborn, you can take them to a designated safe place. The state’s Safe Haven Law, also known as the Baby Moses law, allows parents who are unable to care for their children to legally and safely surrender them up until they are 60 days old by handing them over at designated safe places, like hospitals and fire stations.
