Local 18-year-old donates 150 fleece blankets to children living in shelters
SAN ANTONIO โ Sam Sanchez was 12-years-old when she kick start her mission to provide children living in shelters with a sense of comfort. Six years later, Sanchez, the founder of Samโs Covers, has continued to create and donate fleece blankets to children living in emergency shelters. Sanchez said that after meeting with several of the children living at area shelters, sheโs hoping to help in another way. โTalking to them for a few hours and learning about their background, Itโs so important to listen and be present,โ Sanchez said. On Monday she donated 150 blankets for children living at Roy Maas Youth Alternatives Emergency Shelters and has no plans of stopping.

Vietnamese National Team guard coaches at youth basketball camp during summer
San Antonio The pandemic has not made it easy for 22-year-old and former Reagan girls basketball standout, Mailee Jones, to train with her teammates on the Vietnamese Womens National Basketball Team. Jones, who has been home from Vietnam since February, began volunteering at her fathers youth basketball camp, Shooting for Success, in March. Ive been here the entire time 7:30am helping the kids out, making sure theyre not only learning basketball skills, but also life skills, Jones said. Jones, whose mother Diane is half-Vietnamese, left the NCAA to join the Vietnamese national team in 2019 becoming the first Vietnamese-American to make the squad. She is hoping to build the teams basketball competencies and help the team finish well in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games.

SAN ANTONIO โ Prevented by the COVID-19 pandemic from proudly marching onto football fields, in parades or even practicing in the summer heat, Reagan High School director of bands Daniel Morrison had to get creative. This year, the Reagan High School Marching Bandโs summer camp was not only virtual, it became an โall star master classโ taught by professional musicians, and even a dancer. "Between the three band directors, we knew almost all of these people and were able to connect with them," Morrison said. Using funds from its budget that in the past paid for competition fees, food, travel and other band expenses, Morrison said the professional musicians were paid their typical hourly rate. It was well worth it, he said, given the caliber of talent that has been working with nearly all 350 Reagan High School band members.

However, thatโs exactly what Ronald Reagan High School graduating senior, Will Carsten, accomplished with opportunities to play baseball at Texas State, Miami and Oklahoma State among others or basketball at Southeast Missouri State, an offer he received in April. Carsten was coached by John Hirst and Chans Chapman at Reagan in baseball and baseball, respectively, and both coaches said Carstenโs work ethic allowed him to be such a successful multisport athlete. โI think heโs a great player. I think heโs got a really high ceiling,โ said Hirst. Carsten decommitted from playing baseball at Tulane in December but the 6-8 right-handed pitcher knew his physical attributes could still make a bigger difference in baseball.

SAN ANTONIO โ A Reagan High School student who was found unconscious in the schoolโs weight room has died, officials said. Reagan High principal Brenda Shelton said the student was found around 2:30 p.m. Monday. Staff members attempted livesaving measures, but the student did not survive, Shelton said. The San Antonio Police Department is investigating the case as an apparent suicide, according to officials with the North East Independent School District. Shelton said no other student was involved, and no one else is in danger.
Reagan boysโ basketball coach earns 400th career victory
San Antonio โ After 27 years of coaching, Ronald Reagan boysโ head basketball coach, John Hirst, eclipsed the 400-win mark December 28 in Austin. โItโs a time to reflect on, you know, people whoโve had an impact on your life and in your career. Hirst was also able to secure the win while his son Jacob, a senior power forward, was on the Rattlers roster. โHeโs a great coach and I want to be like my dad,โ Hirst said. After nearly three decades coaching, Hirst says the most important accomplishment in his career has been using basketball as a vehicle to teach his players to become responsible adults.

SAN ANTONIO โ Students in the Reagan High School marching band are seemingly having the time of their lives in the Big Apple as they prepare for the Macyโs Thanksgiving Day Parade. From taking over the โTodayโ show to spreading Rattler pride across Times Square, students have taken in the sights and sounds of New York City this week. The most recent post from North East Independent School District shows the 300-plus member band in the heart of Times Square, just blocks from where theyโll be nationally televised during their performance of โJoy.โโReagan HS Marching Band takes over Times Square in NYC!โ the Wednesday morning post, with more than 300 shares, states. The band was selected for the parade in May 2018 after creative producer Wesley Whatley traveled to San Antonio to make the surprise announcement.
