Adult literacy: the hidden crisis in plain sight
CHICAGO โ Itโs a crisis hidden in plain sight, as about 20 percent of people in the United States cannot read at all and 50 percent of adults canโt read to pass an eighth-grade level. โPeople who canโt read have all kinds of troubles in life that you might not even think of,โ Joanne Telser-Frere, Director of Program Development at Literacy Chicago told Ivanhoe. Thatโs why Joanne is part of Literacy Chicago, an organization whose mission it is to empower adults through reading. โPeople often need someone to tell them they can do it, because their whole life theyโve been told they canโt,โ Joanne said. Literacy Chicago classes are free to students.

New FIFA rules to protect female players' maternity rights
(AP Photo/Alastair Grant)GENEVA โ Female soccer players should soon get their maternity rights protected under new employment rules announced Thursday by FIFA. โThe idea is to protect female players before, during and after childbirth,โ FIFA chief legal officer Emilio Garcia said on a conference call. The rules are expected to be approved by the FIFA Council next month and would take effect on Jan. 1. โWe think these rules are part of common sense,โ he said of the move, which follow International Labor Organization standards on compensating maternity leave. At least eight weeks of the 14-week minimum maternity leave must be after the player gives birth.
SAISDโs โBook Buddiesโ program is helping students build up home libraries, create interest in reading
SAN ANTONIO โ A program in the San Antonio community aims to help students get into reading by helping them build up their libraries at home. The San Antonio Independent School Districtโs Book Buddies program provides free books to students in grades Pre-K through eighth grade. SAISD said this school year, the Book Buddies program hopes to grow and distribute over 100,000 books to more than 16,000 students in more than 35 area schools. SAISD needs volunteers to help sort books for its Book Buddies program. We are very proud to support this effort," said Jim Perschbach, president and CEO of Port San Antonio.
Libyan man admits stabbing murders of 3 friends in UK park
LONDON โ A 26-year-old Libyan man pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday for stabbing three friends to death as they sat in an English city park. Khairi Saadallah admitted to three counts of murder and three of attempted murder for the June 20 attack in Reading, 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of London. James Furlong, 36, David Wails, 49, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, were enjoying a warm Saturday evening in the city's Forbury Gardens park when they were stabbed. Each died from a single stab wound. The judge set a sentencing hearing for the week of Dec. 7.
Uvalde County reinstates mask order following spike in COVID-19 cases

San Antonio students can score prizes with Spurs Whatโcha Reading Program
SAN ANTONIO โ Teachers in San Antonio and the surrounding areas can now register their classes as part of this yearโs Spurs Whatโcha Reading program, which will take place starting Oct. 19, a press release said. The reading and literacy program is for students in first through fifth grade and is designed to encourage students of all reading levels to expand their reading abilities. โIn the more than 20 years that Whataburger has partnered with the Spurs to support the Whatโcha Reading program, itโs been such a joy to see so many children develop a love of reading,โ said Whataburger Sponsorship Director Jeff Altman. In partnership with the Spurs Whatโcha Reading Program, the San Antonio Public Libraries have created a monthly curated list of free downloadable books, available by clicking here. SAN ANTONIO โ Three great organizations are teaming up so that 1,000 teachers will win an estimated 20,000 books. To win, you must be a Title 1 teacher, federally funded teachers that work with students who have yet to master math and reading skills. From there, 1,000 teachers will be selected to win a batch of free books for their classroom. Teachers who win will go to a website and select the books they would like to receive, so this can benefit any age range, from babies to teens. Teachers can send books home for students to read.
