Huge upsets and wild endings on second night of bi-district girls' basketball

High school girls’ basketball playoffs continue with the area round later this week

SAN ANTONIO – On the second night of high school girls' basketball playoffs, the bi-district round heated up with huge matchups that led to incredible endings from teams across the area.

At Northside Sports Gym, the Brennan Bears jumped out to a 17-2 lead over the Johnson Jaguars at the end of the first quarter, but the Jags closed the gap before losing 61-54.

Over at the Alamo Convocation Center, the 11th-ranked Sam Houston Hurricanes were in a four-point game against Southside when the two teams started the second half.

The Lady Cardinals relied on the unstoppable McKayla Flores, who scored 22 points in the Lady Cardinals’ 38-29 upset over Sam Houston, sending them to the area round.

“Honestly, it means a lot to, you know, make our community proud and to come and win another playoff game,” said Flores. “I’m sure they’re proud of us and it’s because of them we’re here, so I’m very thankful for that.”

“Oh my gosh, it feels amazing,” said senior guard Gabryela Galvan. “We all work hard. We all want what’s best for each other and we just push each other like every day. (Like) in the locker room at halftime, we all knew we wanted it. We listened to each other. We trusted and now we get to celebrate together.”

The Wagner girls’ basketball team also had a huge battle as the top-ranked Thunderbirds traveled to take on the second-ranked Glenn Grizzlies.

Wagner senior guard LA Sneed hit one of her two free throws with 4.8 seconds left in the game to bring the score to 56-55.

Glenn did not get a shot off as the clock ran out and the Thunderbirds earned the huge win.
