Thanks to an impressive winning streak, Sam Houston girls are primed for a deep playoff run

The Hurricanes won a district championship for the first time in 12 years.

SAN ANTONIO – After a historic regular season for the Sam Houston girls basketball team, the Hurricanes are ready to make a deep run in the playoffs.

The 2024-25 team made history when it became the program’s first to win a district title in 12 seasons.

The Hurricanes are on a 21-game winning streak and are eager to keep their momentum entering the first round of playoffs next week.

“I knew coming in that we were going to have a pretty good team, but I just knew we had to be consistent. You know, show up every day,” Sam Houston head coach Chancy Campbell said. “But it’s very gratifying knowing that these young ladies put in the hard work. Everything that they’re accomplishing is a blessing, so I’m just really proud of these young ladies.”

“This success is good,” Sam Houston sophomore guard Jakiyah Caldwell said. “We had a little bit up and downs (sic), but as a team, we pushed together.”

“We know we’re capable of winning, and if we all just work together — like we’ve been doing — yeah, we’ll win,” Sam Houston senior forward Breyanna Murry said.

The Hurricanes will face Southside High School on Feb. 11 at the Alamo Convocation Center in the bi-district round of the UIL Class 5A playoffs.
