SAN ANTONIO – This week, the Sotomayor High School girls basketball team made history when it became the first Wildcat team to win a district title.
Sotomayor (24-8) defeated Warren 64-53, avenging their only district loss this season. With the win, the District 28-6A crown is now theirs.
“That was our goal coming into this season, so to accomplish it, it was just a great thing and just overwhelming,” Sotomayor head coach Kelli Goble said. “And all the fan support and atmosphere was great.”
“It felt really good knowing that we had accomplished our goal we set at the beginning of the season and seeing that we finally accomplished,” Sotomayor senior forward Jah’Dae Bussey said. “It’s a big thing.”
The Wildcats are currently on a bye, but they practiced Friday morning with playoff-level intensity. The players said they have drawn inspiration from Basketball Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant.
“The job’s not finished,” Sotomayor junior guard Jordan Pete said. “We lost bi-districts last year, so putting in the extra work together helps us achieve these goals like (becoming) district champs.”
“We’re not done yet. We’re just getting started,” Bussey said. “All of us are some dogs. Just be ready for us.”
The Wildcats will host Harlan for senior night on Tuesday.
