New Braunfels police say suspect taken into custody after standoff ends ‘peacefully’

The standoff began Tuesday morning at a home in the 2000 block of Carter Lane

NEW BRAUNFELS, TexasUPDATE (5:54 p.m.): New Braunfels police said a standoff that began Tuesday morning has ended “peacefully” several hours later.

Authorities said members from the Guadalupe County Constable’s Office arrived at the home in the 2000 block of Carter Lane to serve the occupant a court order to vacate.

Officers learned the occupant, later identified as 64-year-old John Michael Herrmann, was armed inside the home and pointed his weapon at law enforcement. When the constables saw Herrmann’s weapon, they exited the home and requested help from the New Braunfels Police Department.

When NBPD arrived on the scene at approximately 10 a.m., officers found Herrmann inside the home.

Hours later, students and staff at Voss Farms Elementary School were evacuated from campus and transported to another school, where families were reunited with their children.

The police department said its SWAT Team entered Herrmann’s home around 4:15 p.m. and took him into custody without incident.

Herrmann has been charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, a first-degree felony. Police said he was transported to the Guadalupe County Jail and is facing a bond worth $250,000, among other charges.

No injuries were reported in this incident.

Below is the original story from Tuesday afternoon.

  • Walkers, parent walk-ups, and bike riders MUST BE PICKED UP from Legend Point as car riders. Please bring an official form of personal identification with you and remain in your vehicle until your child is brought to your vehicle.
  • After-school care students MUST BE PICKED UP from Legend Point as car riders because after-school care at Voss Farms has been cancelled. Please bring an official form of personal identification with you and remain in your vehicle until your child is brought to your vehicle.

These groups of students will be transported as normal but from Legend Point:
