SAN ANTONIO – A man who rammed into multiple San Antonio police units in a stolen car has been arrested on charges of aggravated assault against a public servant, according to an arrest affidavit.

Officers in full-duty uniforms and marked units found Mathew Wayne Drawhorn, 27, asleep in the front seat of the stolen SUV in a motel parking lot in the 3800 block of Interstate 35 North around 11:19 p.m. on Jan. 24, the affidavit states.

The incident began when an SAPD officer noticed a suspicious black Chevy Tahoe parked against a building in a motel parking lot. The vehicle’s license plate returned as an active stolen vehicle through the system.

Officers in five patrol vehicles blocked the Tahoe and attempted to arrest Drawhorn, the affidavit said.

One officer opened the vehicle’s passenger door, waking Drawhorn, who then put the SUV into reverse and hopped over a parking curb before hitting the building, police said. This knocked the first officer out of the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Another officer attempted to prevent further movement but was pushed away by the moving vehicle, police said.

Drawhorn repeatedly crashed into patrol vehicles, pushing them toward officers and nearly running over one officer as he maneuvered past the vehicles, the affidavit said. He then fled in the stolen vehicle, with officers unable to pursue due to their damaged patrol units, police said.

No officers were injured.

A tip from Crime Stoppers identified Drawhorn as the suspect, according to SAPD. A witness who knew Drawhorn told police the suspect had asked him to move property from one stolen vehicle to another.

Undercover follow-up units attempted to stop the stolen vehicles, but one fled, nearly striking more patrol vehicles. Police detained the witness on warrants. He told the police that he witnessed Drawhorn hitting the patrol vehicles, the affidavit said.

Another witness, contacted on Jan. 30, confirmed that he lived close to the suspect and saw Drawhorn crash into patrol vehicles, the affidavit stated. This witness identified him in a photo lineup and described the incident as “attempted murder” of police officers, according to the affidavit.

Drawhorn was arrested on Sunday. He faces three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and one count of evading arrest with a vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing.
