SAN ANTONIO – Eighty-five cancer patients in San Antonio were treated with a makeover and a new head of hair on Saturday morning.
Texas Oncology partnered with nonprofit Angeles Sin Fronteras to try and give a new sense of confidence to the women.
“I’m feeling wonderful, I feel very pampered,” said recipient Leticia Heriford. “I think I have some life in me after a very long time.”
Nancy Razo, another recipient, said when she saw a wig with highlights on it, she knew “it was the one” for her.
“Even though there’s a lot of us, they make you feel like number one,” Razo said.
Founder Tere Castello started her nonprofit when she was first diagnosed with cancer. Since then, Angeles Sin Fronteras gives away around 500 wigs every year.
Dr. Emmalind Aponte, medical oncologist with Texas Oncology, said gaining confidence and a positive outlook can positively impact patient health.
“Just having something to maybe take the focus out of the cancer diagnosis and help you just to feel better about yourself, it can improve how you follow your treatment,” Aponte said. “We only talk about their treatments, what’s the next step, so it’s exciting to be part of this event”.
Going forward, Heriford is encouraging other people around her to get themselves regularly screened for cancer.
“Now I’m trying to advocate — please go get checked,” Heriford said.
