Crews left cleaning up after deadly police shooting, fiery crash in downtown San Antonio

Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office also identifies 19-year-old shot, killed by SAPD officers

SAN ANTONIO – Staff members at the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office have tentatively identified a man who was shot and killed by San Antonio police officers Thursday.

The medical examiner’s office identified the 19-year-old as Nathaniel Moreno just after 7 p.m. Friday.

Officials said Moreno died of multiple gunshot wounds. His death has been ruled a homicide, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday night.

Police said Moreno was one of two people inside a stolen car that officers had tried to stop in the area of N. Flores and W. Commerce streets.

Instead of stopping, police said the driver took off, crashed into other cars and knocked down a light pole.

When they tried to box the car in, SAPD said the driver headed toward the officers who stood outside their vehicles.

The officers then fired shots at the men in the car, police said.

The car continued down West Commerce Street where it crashed into a building and burst into flames.

Police said the second person in the vehicle was in critical condition when he went to a hospital by ambulance.

It is unclear if he was wounded in the shooting or injured in the crash.

A video shared with KSAT 12 News showed the moments before the car caught fire.

It showed SAPD officers breaking a window on the crashed car, removing two men and dragging them to safety.

“I saw it at 5 (p.m.) when I went home, on the news,” said a worker named Lorenzo, as he hosed down a sidewalk outside Penner’s clothing store Friday morning, just across the street from the crash scene.

“When I got here, I asked my boss (about the mess),” Lorenzo said. “That’s a lot of damage out here.”

The building struck by the car was reportedly vacant. The crash left it with soot all over its exterior walls.

A crew swept up glass and other debris from the area Friday morning near what had been a window.

Later, workers with Centro SA used a power washer to clean the blackened sidewalk.

Down the street, another crew with the City of San Antonio repaired a damaged light pole.

All morning, curious onlookers stopped by. Some took pictures of what was left of the chaotic scene.

Police officers said they are continuing to investigate. The officers who fired their weapons are three-year and five-year veterans of the department, respectively.
