Bexar County Medical Examiner identifies man shot, killed outside nightclub on South Side

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE on 2/3/2025: The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified a man shot and killed on the South Side early Sunday morning.

Ricky Marquez, 42, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, the ME’s office told KSAT. His death was ruled a homicide.

The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2200 block of Commercial Avenue at Papi Gallo Cantina, according to San Antonio police.

Police said Marquez and another person were involved in a “verbal altercation” with multiple others inside the nightclub.

The argument escalated into a shooting outside the nightclub, SAPD said. Marquez was pronounced dead on the scene, and the other victim was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

The shooter or shooters fled from the location, police said.


ORIGINAL STORY: A man was killed and another person was injured after a shooting on the South Side early Sunday morning, according to San Antonio police.

Officers responded to the shooting just before 1:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Commercial Avenue at Papi Gallo Cantina.

Upon arrival, officers found two people with gunshot wounds, police said.

Police said the victims had been involved in a “verbal altercation” with multiple people inside the building. The argument continued outside and escalated into a shooting with two victims, SAPD said.

A 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The second victim was taken to a hospital, and the extent of their injuries is currently unknown.

The shooters fled the location, according to police.

Additional information was not immediately available. The investigation is ongoing.
