SAN ANTONIO – As Donald Trump was sworn in on Monday as the 47th president of the United States, enthusiastic San Antonio Republicans and conservatives tuned in to watch at an event center on the North Side.
“It’s a rebirth of our nation,” said Maryann Pagerly, chair of Precinct 4179. “It’s hard not to get emotional today.”

When questioned about the primary concern that resonated with people, members of the group cited the economy and immigration, noting San Antonio’s proximity to the border. Here are some responses:
- Pagerly: “We have to have hope in the fact that the young people can buy new homes, and they can afford groceries and gas.”
- Paula Villagran: “We want to see the middle class get better and stronger.”
- Jolyn Powell: “He’s not waiting to do anything. He is doing it now, and that is very exciting.”
Despite disagreements between Democrats and Republicans, the group agreed bipartisanship is possible.
“I think that the kind of bipartisanship that we want is built on principles and truth,” said Allen Hamilton, co-director of Network for Patriots. “There’s got to be ways to find that middle ground.”
On Monday, the Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa released the following statement
“Donald Trump isn’t looking out for Texans – he’s only looking out for himself and his billionaire buddies. Texans deserve an economy that works for them, but Trump’s reckless plans will raise costs while threatening small businesses and industries that serve our communities, putting jobs and livelihoods at risk. After campaigning on supporting working Texans, Donald Trump has shown us exactly who he is by assembling the wealthiest Cabinet in United States history to rip off the American people.
“On day one, Trump is making clear that he intends to use the might of the U.S. government to further the interests of the ultra-wealthy at the expense of everyone else. Today and every day, Texas Democrats will stand up to Trump whenever he puts his personal agenda above the interests of working Texans.”
