The officers are helping the Metropolitan Police Department while Trump is sworn into office.

“We want a peaceful transition of power for the presidency,” SAPD Lt. Jacob Garza said. “We’re going to be there to help protect not just the local residents but also the foreign dignitaries and national dignitaries that are coming in.”

SAPD deployed 45 officers when Trump took office for the first time in 2017.

The increase in officers being sent this time reflects heightened security concerns and a greater emphasis on ensuring the safety of all attendees.

“It’s a great honor for me personally and for all of us that are going and attending,” Garza said. “It’s a privilege to participate and be a part of the inauguration task force.”

Garza said most of his team going to D.C. for the inauguration are first-timers.

In addition to SAPD’s presence, law enforcement agencies nationwide are also mobilizing to provide support. D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department covers the costs for police departments to participate in the inauguration task force.

As preparations continue, authorities urge attendees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
