BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A man was arrested in connection with a crash that killed a woman and injured two others in south Bexar County, according to an arrest affidavit.

Jose Alfredo Nino Lopez, 28, was arrested on Thursday, authorities said. He was charged with manslaughter, injury to a child — reckless bodily injury, and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, Bexar County Jail records show.

The crash, which involved a minivan and a pickup truck, happened around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, in the 1700 block of Martinez Losoya Road.

The affidavit states Lopez was traveling eastbound while 40-year-old Crystal Mendoza, the minivan driver, was traveling westbound when the collision occurred.

Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

The affidavit claims that a witness approached Lopez’s vehicle and “lifted the driver-side curtain airbag” and saw Lopez sitting in the driver’s seat. However, deputies on the scene claimed they saw Lopez climb out of the driver-side window.

The witness reported that they did not see anyone running from the scene.

It’s unclear if the witness saw Lopez before or after BCSO arrived at the scene to investigate.

Lopez told BCSO that “he was not driving and did not know what happened,” according to the affidavit.

Two teens in the minivan were injured: a 13-year-old sustained a broken femur, and a 14-year-old said she had ankle pain. They were taken to a local hospital for further treatment, BCSO said.

Lopez was also transported to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Investigators obtained a search warrant on Tuesday, Jan. 14, for the vehicle’s airbag control module to determine Lopez’s speed during the collision.

The affidavit states Lopez drove 65 mph five seconds before impact, approximately 30 mph over the speed limit.
