High schoolers compete to solve San Antonio issues

Students from CAST Schools will head to state competition in April

SAN ANTONIO – More than 250 students from CAST Schools in San Antonio gathered at the seventh annual Speak Up Speak Out Civics Fair, where they tackled real-life community issues with innovative solutions.

The fair was held Friday at Texas A&M University-San Antonio.

Jeanne Russell, the executive director for CAST Schools, said this is an opportunity for students to take a look at the problems around their community that impact them and develop and implement a solution.

The students competed, with the winners heading to the state competition in Austin in April.

Student Edgar Payan said it was eye-opening to see how difficult it is to not only find a solution but a way to implement and sustain the program.

“It puts into perspective (that) real problems are hard to tackle,” Payan said.
