Poteet ISD releases students after receiving bomb threat email, district says

Email came around 8:30 a.m. Friday; all students evacuated

POTEET, Texas – The Poteet Independent School District sent its students home early Friday after receiving a bomb threat email, according to the district’s police chief.

Chief Willie Mendez said the threat came around 8:30 a.m. as half of the schools had already begun their days.

As campuses were secured, the district decided on a student relocation point and proceeded with evacuations.

High and middle school students were evacuated first, followed by intermediate and elementary students.

Superintindent Charles Caramillo and Assistant Superintindent Amanda Gonzales briefed the media just before 1 p.m.

Reading a statement from the district, Gonzales said bomb-sniffing dogs with the U.S. Marshals, Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked to clear schools.

You can view the district’s statement below.

Caramillo said the bomb threat email was directed toward two teachers but did not describe specifics.

Gonzales said the middle and high schools had been cleared, and officials were working to clear the elementary and intermediate schools.

An investigation is underway to determine the source and identify the person who made the threat, the district said.

The district said it expects school to resume next week but would keep parents updated on any changes.
