SAN ANTONIO – A second family is suing the San Antonio Zoo and Alamo City Arbor Care after court documents suggest a large tree branch fell and struck them in 2023.

Miguel A. Mena, Thelma Judith Robles and their three children filed the lawsuit on Dec. 18, 2024, in Bexar County District Court, records show.

According to the lawsuit, the Mena family visited the zoo on March 15, 2023. The lawsuit claims that, without warning, a huge and rotted tree limb fell and struck the Mena family on the zoo’s premises.

“This tree limb knocked the Mena family members to the ground,” the lawsuit stated.

The Mena family is seeking more than $1 million in damages, according to court documents.

“It was apparent that it was a matter of time for this type of accident to occur,” the lawsuit stated.

The Mena family’s lawsuit follows the lawsuit filed on behalf of the Rodriguez family, who were injured in the same incident.

One of the Rodriguez’s children “was in a coma for several days and has had surgery,” the Rodriguez family lawsuit stated.

KSAT reported on the fallen tree branch after it broke around noon on March 15, 2023. The branch injured seven guests.

The San Antonio Zoo released a statement on the Mena family lawsuit to KSAT on Wednesday evening.

“San Antonio Zoo is aware of the lawsuit filed by the Mena family. The safety of our guests, staff, and animals is always the zoo’s priority. This was an unfortunate accident that was not caused by any action or inaction by San Antonio Zoo or its employees. We look forward to demonstrating that through the legal process.

KSAT also reached out to Alamo City Arbor Care for comment but has not yet heard back.
