SAN ANTONIO – Centro San Antonio issued a request for proposals (RFP) last month to address the development of a “comprehensive parking study” for downtown.

Centro’s Chief Strategy Officer, Edwin Aaron Romero, posted on LinkedIn that the project aims to “align with San Antonio’s broader mobility and placemaking goals.”

The call for proposals, nearing its deadline this Friday, went out to prospective firms to conduct the study.

Centro services an area of nearly one square mile downtown.

The impetus for the study was drawn from concerns from both residents and tourists around availability, accessibility and affordability, according to Centro CEO Trish DeBerry.

“This study aims to evaluate current and projected parking demand, assess the capacity and condition of existing infrastructure, and develop innovative strategies to optimize parking availability and curbside management,” DeBerry said in an email to KSAT.

DeBerry said future initiatives from the study could include creating an app allowing visitors to reserve parking spaces in advance.

Other deliverables, according to the RFP, include a parking inventory report on the current parking supply, utilization and user profiles and a report for projected parking demand, including electric vehicle and autonomous needs.

Centro’s study comes as the immediate urban core of downtown will see a significant overhaul over the next several years.

Planned sports arenas downtown for the Spurs and Missions baseball team and a reimagined East Side near the Alamodome will likely consider parking options as the respective plans develop.

DeBerry said, after completion, the study would provide Centro with “an updated snapshot of the parking landscape within the urban core.”

Centro expects the study, nearing its deadline, to be finalized by the second quarter of this year, DeBerry said.
