Haven for Hope to hold winter clothing drive; cold weather will arrive first

‘Share the Warmth’ donation drive is scheduled for Jan. 11 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio’s largest organization serving people without housing is trying to help a vulnerable population prepare for winter weather, but the cold is coming before its donation drive.

Haven for Hope plans to hold its second “Share the Warmth” donation drive on Jan. 11, but that will come after the coldest stretch of weather so far this winter.

Temperatures are expected to dip near freezing halfway through next week.

HEADS UP: Colder air set to arrive in San Antonio next week

January and February are typically the coldest months of the year in San Antonio.

Haven for Hope is looking to collect 3,000 pieces of warm-weather clothing, especially for men.

Haven for Hope spokeswoman Terri Behling said the nonprofit will give the coats it has now to the 1,700 people on its campus. The clothing that comes in through the Jan. 11 drive will go to its clients and to people living on the street through its outreach teams.

“So, we’re urging people while you’re still home on break— maybe you’re home from school and work — this is a great weekend to go through those closets and donate anything you’re no longer using," Behling said.

Some of Haven for Hope’s residents said it can be hard to keep ahold of a coat without a home.

Albert Guerrero said he tried to hold onto a previous coat before it was stolen.

“You can’t keep (it) with you forever, so you ditch it,” Jonathan Cruz said. “When it comes back to hot, you get hot clothes. When it comes back to cold, you get cold clothes.”
