SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer shot a man who was evading police on the North Side, according to SAPD Chief William McManus.
The shooting happened just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 300 block of Melrose Place, near Howard Street.
McManus said a covert unit was tracking two men wanted for “violent offenses.” One of the men had an active warrant for aggravated assault.
The men left an H-E-B store and attempted to get into a vehicle, which turned out to be stolen, McManus said.
When they saw the officers, they ran to the back of an apartment complex nearby.
One suspect pulled a weapon on the officers, and officers fired at him, striking him once, McManus said.
George Herrera was at that H-E-B on Olmos Drive getting last-minute supplies before Christmas when he saw police.
“As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, there were police officers running,” Herrera said. “We really didn’t know what was going on. The officers cornered off the area pretty quickly. It was pretty intense.”
The condition of the suspect is unknown at this time, and McManus did not disclose where they were shot.
McManus said it is unclear if the suspect fired his weapon.
Both men are in custody, he said.
