Latest shooting by police officer raises SAPD’s total for the year to 22

Officer shoots, wounds woman claiming to have gun, report says

SAN ANTONIO – A shooting by a San Antonio police officer early Monday morning, which left a woman critically wounded, brings the total number of shootings involving officers so far this year to 22.

That number is equal to the total for all of 2023.

Last year, the shootings by SAPD officers resulted in 14 deaths, according to data supplied by SAPD at the time. At least eight officers were wounded.

In the latest shooting of 2024, a single officer fired gunshots shortly after 1:30 a.m. Monday and left the 30-year-old woman in critical condition.

A preliminary report says officers were called to the 200 block of Loma Park, not far from Culebra Road, and found out the woman had tried to break into her ex-boyfriend’s home.

The report says officers saw her there, and she made a slashing motion toward her own arm with some sort of blade.

It says the woman also told police she had a gun in her possession.

She then began to run off, and officers deployed a Taser, which had no effect, the report says.

At some point, one of the officers fired several gunshots, striking the woman one time, police said in the report.

She was rushed to a hospital.

Benito Campo, who lives a few doors down, told KSAT 12 News in Spanish that he heard the gunshots and saw the woman on the ground when he looked outside his door.

He said he was not able to see whether she had any weapons because it was too dark outside at the time.

It is unclear whether police recovered the blade or a gun at the scene.

The report said SAPD is continuing to investigate the shooting.

The officer who fired the shots, a three-year veteran of the department, has been placed on administrative duty, the report says.
