A San Antonio police sergeant at the scene said people in a house noticed that someone was attempting to steal a car from a neighbor’s driveway.

A man confronted the car burglar and began exchanging gunfire with other people in two separate vehicles — a small white SUV and a gray sedan.

The man was shot in the back. He was taken to the hospital in critical, but stable, condition.

The car burglar and the shooters fled in the SUV and sedan.

Police stated that the broken steering column led them to believe the incident was an attempted car theft.
