The Wonder Theatre has announced the lineup of shows that will take place on the mainstage this year at its new location, the Wonderland of the Americas mall.

The Wonder Theatre (formerly known as the Woodlawn Theatre) is now putting on “Ragtime” for the first show of their 2023 season.

Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Price-winning novel that was later turned into a popular Steven Spielberg 1985 film featuring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, the show tells the heartwarming story of Celie’s tough, but inspiring life.

The Woodlawn Theatre will soon be known as the Wonder Theatre once it moves to the Wonderland of the Americas.

In the midst of a pandemic that’s forced people to stay physically distant, live music and performance venues have been hit particularly hard. Local director and choreographer Lizel Sandoval is one of the countless artists who has been out of a job for months. “I made a decision to leave my day job and focus on my contract work and to become a stay at home mom for my twins,” Sandoval said. “These kiddos had worked so hard.”Every single contract job she had lined up for the year was canceled.

Woodlawn Theatre has had to push pause on its summer performances. But they are adapting and hoping to raise money with a live virtual performance tonight. We want to appeal to our patrons and show off our performers in the best light, Christopher Rodriguez Woodlawn Theatre Executive Artistic Director said. This is a fundraiser for the Woodlawn Theatre. We are doing it so the Woodlawn Theatre is still around, Rodriguez said.

SAN ANTONIO – This year to celebrate its 75th anniversary, the Woodlawn Theatre is hosting a weekly movie night. Starting this Friday, people can watch a movie musical for $10 on the theater’s big screen. All ticket sales will go to help the Woodlawn Theatre and Woodlawn Theatre Academy. Woodlawn Theatre – The Woodlawn Theatre is kicking off the year with their production of The Music Man. The show as about a con man named Harold Hill who tries to dupe the residents of River City, Iowa with his moneymaking scheme first debuted on Broadway in 1957. For this production, the Woodlawn has partnered with the nonprofit YOSA(Youth Orchestras of San Antonio) and will be collecting new or used musical instruments and supplies to support the music education programs that reach more than 2,500 young musicians throughout San Antonio each year. The Woodlawn Theatre is bringing the Australian outback to San Antonio with their production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The show is based on the 1994 movie of the same name. During the run of the show, the Woodlawn Theatre is collecting toiletries to benefit the SA Aids Foundation. The musical does contain adult themes and language, and the theater suggest patrons be over 18. The show runs every weekend until November 4th and tickets range from $18-$30.
