Despite ongoing labor negotiations and after decades of performances, the San Antonio Symphony will soon be no more after a unanimous vote from its board of directors.

The unique history between the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Symphony may make it challenging to build a strong foundation for the future, but the executive director of the symphony says they’re committed to moving forward.

Sebastian Lang-Lessing, the now-former San Antonio Symphony music director, says he will perform in a scheduled concert to support the Musicians of the San Antonio Symphony in May. That support, he says, may have cost him his job.

SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio Symphony announced Tuesday that it received a $17,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to continue virtually a first-of-its-kind program that incorporates Shakespeare into the classroom. The grant for the symphony will allow organizers and performers to continue performances in a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement, Jeremey Brimhall, education director for the San Antonio Symphony, said the program was a semester-long initiative utilizing music and language arts to impact learning.
