Local animal shelters see jump in donations for Betty Whiteโs birthday
The San Antonio Humane Society and the Animal Defense League of Texas have seen spikes in donations connected to the #BettyWhiteChallenge. The challenge, which was born out of social media shortly after Whiteโs death on Dec. 31, urges people to donate $5 to an animal rescue organization for the Golden Girls starโs Jan. 17 birthday.
San Antonio animal shelters offer free, discounted adoption fees for โbig muttsโ during spring break
SAN ANTONIO โ The Animal Defense League and San Antonio Humane Society are offering adoption specials for โbig muttsโ this spring break. ADL spokesperson Michelle Thorson said pets over 40 pounds will have their adoption fees waived through March 14. Instead, the animal shelter is asking for a monetary donation to help support the program and pets in need. At the San Antonio Humane Society, the โI Like Big Mutts and I Cannot Lieโ special is offering a $25 adoption fee for large dogs that are at least 1 year old. Interested adopters wanting a meet and greet can email the Adoption Team at adopt@SAhumane.org and write โMeet and Greetโ in the subject line.

The San Antonio Humane Societyโs $10 million expansion project includes the new Leeu Naylor Medical Building that opened in the middle of the pandemic in October. The much larger medical facility has many more holding stations, examining rooms and a rehabilitation room that includes a therapy pool.
San Antonio Humane Society campuses need repair after several pipes burst due to winter storm
SAN ANTONIO โ Just like so many in our viewing area the San Antonio Humane Society has experienced severe water damage from several busted pipes. Both of the nonprofitโs locations -- the main campus on Fredericksburg Road and its Brooks Spay and Neuter clinic on the South Side -- had split pipes from last weekโs severe cold weather. The organization said the no kill animal shelterโs Brooks clinic had such severe damage that the staff there is working out of the main campus until the damage can be repaired. โJust like everyone else, this leak is going to be costly to our organization,โ Kim Hinze, Director of Development & Public Relations for the San Antonio Humane Society said. AdThe nonprofit said thankfully the main campus that houses their animals didnโt loose power for long periods of time and that the animals were kept dry, warm and safe.
San Antonio animal shelters will discount dog, cat adoptions for Valentineโs Day weekend
SAN ANTONIO โ Looking for love in all the wrong places? Two San Antonio shelters, Animals Care Services and San Antonio Humane Society are offering pet adoptions at a discounted rate this Valentineโs Day. AdThose wishing to adopt an animal from ACS, located at 4710 State Highway 151, can make an appointment here. The San Antonio Humane Society, located at 4804 Fredericksburg Road, will have its no-contact adoption special from Wednesday through Tuesday. Potential adopters will still be screened by the Humane Society.

According to the San Antonio Humane Society, the fifth annual โHoliday dinner by the Ranch,โ is meant to spread holiday cheer to pets in the shelter. The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 16 at the San Antonio Humane Society, 4804 Fredericksburg Road, and features pets ready to find their forever homes. โShelter puppies dress up and unwrap special gifts from Santa himself,โ the organization said in a statement. SAN ANTONIO โ A 9-month-old Retriever that captured the hearts of many in San Antonio has officially found her forever home, just in time for the holidays. Tammi was adopted Thursday, Dec. 10, according to the San Antonio Humane Society. Veterinarians found 70 shotgun pellets in Tammiโs body and found that she had injuries consistent with being struck by a car. โWeโre just so happy she has found a loving family in time for the holidays!โ the humane society said in a statement. When she arrived at the San Antonio Humane Society in November, veterinarians discovered 70 shotgun pellets in her body and injuries consistent with being struck by a car. After a surgery and a month of recovery, the shelter is seeking a forever home for Tammi as the holidays approach. While Tammi is feeling much better, she would need a family that can focus on her rehab, which would include short leash walks and stretches. SAN ANTONIO โ The kitten whose story captured hearts around San Antonio has found a forever home. Gunner, now named Thor by his new family, is living โhis best kitten lifeโ after he was adopted on Nov. 1, according to the San Antonio Humane Society. The humane society said it appeared his ears and tail were purposely cut off before he was abandoned. Whataburger hosts pet party with SA Humane Society, launches pet merchandise
