San Antonio At least some San Antonio-area religious schools are preparing to bring students back to campus weeks before their public school counterparts. While the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District has forbidden any private or public schools from resuming in-person instruction this fall until at least after Labor Day over COVID-19 concerns, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has said such local orders dont apply to religious schools. With Paxtons blessing, some San Antonio schools have already announced plans to bring students back. Parents of St. Matthews Catholic School students received a message Wednesday from Principal Geneva Salinas, giving them the option of sending their children to campus on Aug. 17 or staying home for distance learning. Asked what Metro Health would do if religious schools opened against local orders, a spokeswoman for the agency said they had to check with the city attorneys office.

SAN ANTONIO – Rather than raise money for its class activities like it’s done every year, the senior class at San Antonio Christian School raised in excess of $4,000 for the grief-stricken community of Sutherland Springs. “It’s just so great to come out as a class and come together to work toward something other than ourselves,” said Joshua Pink, the senior who organized the Friday event. Pink invited Frank Pomeroy, pastor of First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, to be there to accept the donation. Despite the terrible loss the day of the Sutherland Springs shooting, Pomeroy had a heartfelt message for the nearly 500 students who were at the barbecue fundraiser. But it’s in those times that we find ourselves at our highest point of faith,” Pink said.
