Alamo Drafthouse files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, report says
SAN ANTONIO โ Alamo Drafthouse is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter. The deal will hopefully allow the theaters to survive beyond the pandemic, the report said. Alamo Drafthouse operates about 40 theaters in the U.S. The theater chain is one of the most high-profile entertainment companies to file for bankruptcy amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Bexar Countyโs Indigent Defense System gets mixed reviews
SAN ANTONIO โ A 69-page report evaluating Bexar Countyโs Indigent Defense System was released Wednesday. โThese are courts that will address the problem that brought you into the criminal justice system,โ Chief Public Defender Michael Young said. But Young said the report shows that not everyone is treated fairly. โThis report shows us that weโre not doing a good enough job, that weโre treating people differently," Young said. โI think the takeaway is that we have done a great job in dealing with our Indigent Defense Plan," he said.
Americaโs unemployment rate falls to 13.3% as economy posts surprise job gains
CNN โ The US unemployment rate surprisingly fell to 13.3% in May, as the economy gained 2.5 million jobs. The labor market rebounded from April's drastic losses, when a revised 20.7 million jobs vanished. The unemployment rate last month soared to 14.7% as businesses shut during the coronavirus lockdown. Economists expected the unemployment rate to be even worse in May, rising to nearly 20%. But the gradual reopening of the economy actually added new jobs rather than eliminating further positions.
Police seek man who fired eight shots into Northwest Side apartment
San Antonio police are investigating a report of shots fired at an apartment complex near the Medical Center. Police were called to the Highpoint South apartment complex in the 7100 block of Wurzbach Road just after 1 p.m. Wednesday for reports that someone fired shots at an apartment door. Police said a man went to the location and started an altercation with an apartment resident. The man pushed the gunman out of his apartment and shut the door. The gunman then fired eight rounds through the door and ran away.
