Families of Boeing crash victims renew push for FAA changes
FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson has personally vouched for the plane's safety. A military and airline pilot before heading FAA, Dickson flew a Max in September. Boeing says Max jets have made 9,000 flights for 14 airlines without incident since returning to service late last year. Joe Jacobsen told the family that FAA delegated the review of most aspects of the flight system to a small number of Boeing engineers. The company admitted that two former test pilots hid information about changes to MCAS from the FAA.
Boeing posts $8.4 billion loss on weaker demand for planes
Boeing said Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021, it lost $8.4 billion in the fourth quarter on weaker demand for planes during the pandemic. However, the biggest piece of the fourth-quarter loss reported Wednesday was a pretax charge of $6.5 billion tied to its newest plane, the bigger 777X. It all added up to a record full-year loss of $11.94 billion. Boeing lost $14.65 per share, much worse than the $1.64 per share loss that Wall Street expected, according to a FactSet survey. Boeing began working on the Max in 2011 as an answer to a new, more fuel-efficient model from European rival Airbus. Boeing said in a regulatory filing that it will take a $743.6 million charge against earnings because of the settlement. The crashes and grounding of the Max, Boeingโs best-selling plane, has plunged the Chicago-based company into its deepest crisis.

Waiting for passengers, American puts Boeing Max in the air
An American Airlines Boeing 737 Max jet plane is prepared for to fly from Dallas Fort Worth airport in Grapevine, Texas, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020. American Airlines took its long-grounded Boeing 737 Max jets out of storage, updating key flight-control software, and flying the planes in preparation for the first flights with paying passengers later this month. โI'm really disgusted by the whole thing and the fact that American Airlines would pay for that. It's not responsible for them to put you on this flight.โChicago-based Boeing said Wednesday it has flown more than 1,400 test flights on updated Max planes. Regulators in Europe and Brazil have cleared a path for their airlines to resume Max flights in a few weeks.
European regulator moves to clear Boeing 737 for flight
BERLIN โ European regulators on Tuesday took a step closer to letting the Boeing 737 Max fly again, publishing a proposed airworthiness directive that could see the aircraft cleared within weeks after being grounded for nearly two years over deadly crashes. The publication of the directive by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency opens a 28-day public consultation period after which the agency will review the input and then approve the aircraft for flight. That happened less than five months after another Max flown by Indonesiaโs Lion Air plunged into the Java Sea. The move by the EASA, which is based in Cologne, Germany, comes after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration already cleared the Boeing 737 Max earlier this month. The European directive requires the same changes as those mandated by the FAA, so there will be no software or technical differences between jets operated by American or European carriers.

FILE - In this Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2020, file photo, a Boeing 737 Max jet, piloted by Federal Aviation Administration Chief Steve Dickson, prepares to land at Boeing Field following a test flight in Seattle. The FAA is poised to clear the Boeing 737 Max to fly again after grounding the jets for nearly two years due to a pair of disastrous crashes that killed 346 people. Boeing sales of new planes have plunged because of the Max crisis and the coronavirus pandemic. Hansman said pilot training for qualified 737 pilots shouldnโt take long because Boeing has fixed problems with the Maxโs software. Relatives say it's too soon, and they and their lawyers say Boeing and the FAA are withholding documents.
Deeper job cuts at Boeing as pandemic throttles air travel
Boeing said Wednesday that it will cut 7,000 more jobs as it continues to bleed money during a pandemic that has smothered demand for new airline planes. Boeing Co. outlined the job cuts on the same day it reported a $449 million loss for the third quarter, a swing from the $1.17 billion it earned in the same period last year. Thursday marks the second anniversary of the crash of a Lion Air 737 Max off the coast of Indonesia. With customers in no mood to buy expensive new planes, Boeing expects to keep burning cash. The Max was Boeingโs best-selling plane, but now the company has 450 in storage that it canโt deliver.

Panel's report blasts Boeing, FAA for crashes, seeks reforms
But both the agency and Boeing have said certification of the Max complied with FAA regulations, the 246-page report said. He said the committee won't scrap the delegation program, and he hopes to reach agreement on reforms before year's end. Committee investigators said they found several instances in which Boeing concealed information about MCAS from the FAA and airlines. But there was no evidence that they reported this to the FAA, the report said. According to the report, Boeing wanted to keep details about MCAS from the FAA so it wouldn't require additional pilot training.

Boeing said it deferred to the FAA and global regulators on the Max certification process. Nearly 400 Max planes had been delivered to airlines before they were grounded, and Boeing has built several hundred more.
