With 13 other candidates running for mayor, it remains to be seen whether Nirenberg's fundraising advantage and incumbent status is enough to propel him to victory on May 1, when he would need more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff election.

Here are the key races we’re watching on May 1.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg and challengers Greg Brockhouse and Denise Gutierrez-Homer, all on the ballot for the May 1 election, will be answering journalists’ and residents’ questions during the on-air broadcast of KSAT 12′s 6 p.m. newscast (at 6:30 p.m.) and then extending online from 7 p.m. for about 30 more minutes.

According to the poll, 73% of likely voters with children under 19 either “strongly agreed” or “somewhat agreed” with a continued classroom face mask policy. Another 25% said they disagreed with mandating masks in classrooms.

With several crowded races on the ballot — more than 80 candidates are running for 11 seats — hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions and expenditures have run through local campaigns.

SAN ANTONIO – A former rival of Mayor Ron Nirenberg says he is stepping up to rally opposition against two San Antonio sales tax proposals on the November ballot. He also denied that wading into the sales tax fight is a way to set up another campaign to challenge Nirenberg in 2021, though he believes his mayoral campaign resonated with voters. The proposals he’s opposing, championed by Nirenberg and VIA Metropolitan Transit officials, revolve around new uses for a 1/8 cent portion sales tax. Since the proposals would use the same portion of the sales tax at different times, there would be no change to the 8.25% sales tax rate San Antonio shoppers currently pay -- something to which Nirenberg and VIA officials have repeatedly pointed. The campaigns supporting both sales tax measures provided reactions to Brockhouse’s plans to rally opposition.

SAN ANTONIO – Michael Anthony Horton Jr., 29, who is accused of posing as a San Antonio firefighter twice in one day at the University of Texas at San Antonio, remains in the Bexar County Jail. Horton is accused of impersonating a public servant, a third-degree felony.
