TAMU-SA hosts OLLU for thrilling hoops doubleheader

Both universities' women’s and men’s basketball teams showcased their skills for fans on the South Side

SAN ANTONIO – Despite the spotlight being on the Super Bowl this weekend, a large crowd turned out at Texas A&M University-San Antonio for a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake.

Saturday’s turnout created a surprising and exciting atmosphere.

First, the women’s teams clashed as OLLU sought revenge after losing to TAMU-SA on their home court in December 2024.

The Jaguars defended their home court by breaking away in the second half to win 77-61.

After the game, senior guard Natalia Trevino, who scored a game-high 25 points and previously played for OLLU, shared her thoughts on Saturday’s game. TAMUSA coach Chris Minner, who was the former OLLU head coach, also provided his perspective.

“It feels great, honestly,” Trevino said. “Coach Minner, when he recruited all of us, he said this was going to be a championship program, and that’s what we’re trying to build on. It also means a lot more because Coach Minner’s coming from OLLU; also, he was there for quite a while.

“I graduated from there, so, for us, it’s more than just a game. I mean, every game is a championship game. That’s what coach Minner tells us, and that’s what we just try to do.”

“Yeah, it’s mixed emotions going against OLLU since I was there for so long, but I’m excited to be where I’m at,” Minner said. “We got good girls and a lot of local girls, and we’re young, and we’re 16-8.

“We were picked to finish 11th. We’re gonna finish third or fourth, so this is just the beginning.”

Right after the women played, OLLU and TAMU-SA men’s teams were also eager for their rematch. This time, the Jaguars needed some payback after the Saints scored 100 points on them in their last match.

The Saints cruised to a 97-66 victory, improving to an overall record of 18-6.
