UIW women’s basketball dominates second half in win over UTRGV

The Cardinals are now 4-3 in Southland Conference play

SAN ANTONIO – Coming off a huge Southland Conference win against Houston Christian University last weekend, the UIW women’s basketball team earned back-to-back SLC victories with a 52-43 win over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Thursday night.

The Vaqueros had a familiar face on their roster. Former Johnson High School guard Ja’Shelle Johnson was back in her hometown and prepared to put on a show.

The game was a back-and-forth battle through the first half. The Cardinals took a 22-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the game quickly became “The Destiny Whitaker Show.”

Whitaker scored a team-high 12 points to help the Cardinals earn the win.

UIW will host Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. Saturday.
