SAN ANTONIO – Meet Instant Replay’s newest Scholar Athlete of the Week: Yocelyn Hernandez of Harlandale High School.
Yocelyn is a four-year member and captain of the varsity soccer team. She’s a three-year member of the cross country team and a two-year member of varsity track. She was named First-Team All-District two years in a row, Academic All-District three years in a row and defensive player of the year for soccer. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society, the Girl Scouts and is a lifeguard. She performs community service through the San Antonio Food Bank and a annual can food drive. This coming May Yocelyn will graduate with an associate of science degree from Palo Alto College. Yocelyn plans to attend the University of the Incarnate Word and pursue a bachelor of science in Nursing.
WHAT MEMORIES DO YOU TAKE AWAY WITH YOU AS YOU LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL?
“The last four years I’ve had family, friends and athletics and all of it had a huge impact on my life because spending time with them has made all four years go by really fast.”
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS ON HOW TO BALANCE ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS?
“Don’t procrastinate for sure. Try your best to keep your grades up. Don’t take time for granted.”
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER YOU GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL?
“I plan to attend the University of Incarnate Word and become a nurse practitioner just like my mom. My brother is becoming a doctor, a surgeon and my mom became an RN. I’ve seen my mom work hard over the years and has helped a lot of people.”
WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR PARENTS OR TEACHERS OR COACHES?
“To my family, most importantly my mom and dad, they’ve been with me through thick and thin and have always helped me to pursue my goals.”
