As the new year approaches, it’s a time when many consider their health goals. Part of that might mean reviewing insurance options for 2025.

Two main things individuals want when they choose health care coverage are an affordable and high-quality plan. And everyone’s health needs are different, so it’s important to have choices.

Marketplace Open Enrollment is happening now through Jan. 15, so it’s the perfect time to do some research.

Understanding your health insurance options

When exploring your health insurance options for 2025, it’s essential to consider several key factors that can impact both your coverage and your cost.

According to Community First, University Community Care Plan (UCCP), which is an Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO), offers a variety of benefits and comprehensive coverage. This allows members access to an extensive network of nationally recognized UT Health specialty providers and outpatient health care centers across Bexar County. This includes the University Health Texas Diabetes Institute and the Level 1 Trauma Center at University Hospital.

It’s designed for students, business owners, individuals, families and others who are looking for coverage that meets their specific health needs and budget.

Here are some health plan features you should explore -- all of which are offered by UCCP:

  1. Plans with $0 deductible. Plans with a $0 deductible means you won’t have to pay upfront before your insurance starts covering care. These plans can be especially beneficial for those who want to avoid paying high out-of-pocket expenses before accessing their benefits.
  2. No referral requirements. Plans that do not require a referral to see a specialist can make it easier and faster for you to get the care you need, without the hassle of additional appointments or delays. This is particularly valuable for those who have ongoing or specialized health needs.
  3. Telehealth services. Telehealth has become an important option for many. If you prefer to consult with a doctor from the comfort of your home, explore plans that include telehealth services. These can be ideal for follow-up consultations, minor illnesses or mental health support.
  4. In-home urgent care. Consider plans that offer in-home urgent care services. This benefit allows you to receive medical attention for non-emergency issues at home, making it more convenient to get the care you need, especially if you have mobility challenges or prefer not to go to an urgent care facility.
  5. Prescription delivery. If managing prescriptions is important to you, look for a plan that offers medication delivery. This benefit saves you time and ensures that you stay on top of your medications without needing to visit a pharmacy regularly.

Additional resources to prioritize your health and wellness

Beyond standard coverage, plans like the UCCP offer additional health and wellness resources that can help you manage your well-being year-round. Here are a few important resources to look for when comparing plans:

  • 24/7 nurse line: Access to a nurse line around the clock ensures you can get medical advice and support any time, day or night. UCCP also offers bilingual services to accommodate diverse needs.
  • Health and wellness programs: These help members manage and learn more about chronic conditions, including hypertension, asthma, obesity and diabetes.
  • Mental health care coverage: Comprehensive coverage for care, including counseling and support for conditions such as anxiety, depression and stress management.
  • Pregnancy and family support: You can get access to education and support for expecting moms through the Community First Healthy Expectations Maternity Program, including a baby shower and more.
  • Scholarship opportunities: Opportunities to gain financial assistance for career training, education and more.

Health insurance should be affordable and accessible to all. Depending on household income, members may qualify for a premium tax credit. This is a refundable credit that helps eligible individuals and families cover their monthly insurance payment (premium) for health insurance purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace. A premium tax credit can lower monthly payments by 80%.

Choosing the best plan for you

Choosing the right health plan can be a difficult, stress-inducing decision. Community First makes its mission to alleviate that stress. It is the only locally owned and operated health care provider in the Bexar County area. Because of this, they have learned the unique needs of the community and can provide local support through enrollment and beyond.

By choosing local, members can be assured they are choosing care from people who are genuinely invested in the community.

Enrolling in a UCCP

Open enrollment for UCCP is easy; individuals can apply online at CommunityFirstMarketplace.com or by calling 888-512-2347 to speak to a licensed agent.

A licensed agent can also help find the plan that best fits your needs and determine if you qualify for a premium tax credit to ensure you are taking advantage of all available savings.
