Air Force colonel, OLLU grad announced as César E. Chávez grand marshal

Annual march is scheduled for Saturday, March 22

SAN ANTONIO – The César E. Chávez Educational Foundation announced its grand marshal for the annual march and some early details on Wednesday morning.

Thousands descend on San Antonio’s West Side every year to honor the legacy of civil rights leader César Chávez. The march is entering its 29th year.

The two-mile march will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, near the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Festivities will continue at Hemisfair Park.

On Wednesday, organizers met on the front steps of Our Lady of the Lake University’s (OLLU) Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel.

Col. Gil Coronado, a West Side resident and OLLU graduate, was announced as the march’s grand marshal, and the theme was revealed as “Bring forth song and celebrate.”

Teresa Chavez-Delgado was announced as the family grand marshal.

Ernest Martinez, chairman of the César E. Chávez Educational Foundation, said VIA Metropolitan Transit buses would be available to participants.

Buses will take marchers from OLLU to the beginning of the march at 8 a.m. on Saturday. After the festivities end at Hemisfair, buses will take marchers back to the university.

Martinez said additional details about the march would be revealed in the coming weeks.
