SAN ANTONIO – A second teenager who was critically injured during a San Antonio police shooting and a crash downtown has died.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the teenager as 15-year-old Nicholas Rodriguez, who was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Rodriguez’s cause of death remains unclear, the medical examiner’s office told KSAT on Monday night.
Rodriguez’s death came two days after San Antonio police said officers attempted to pull him and Nathaniel Moreno, 19, over in a reported stolen vehicle on Feb. 6 near the intersection of North Flores Street and West Commerce Street.
At the intersection, officers said they surrounded Moreno and Rodriguez, who refused to stop before they backed into multiple SAPD vehicles and a separate parked vehicle.
SAPD said the stolen vehicle began driving towards two police officers who opened fire on the vehicle and the teenagers inside.
According to SAPD Assistant Police Chief Robert Blanton, the stolen vehicle continued traveling on Commerce Street, struck a building and burst into flames.
The medical examiner’s office said Moreno died of multiple gunshot wounds at the scene. His death was ruled a homicide.
Rodriguez was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. No other injuries were reported, SAPD said.
The department said the two officers were placed on administrative leave.
