‘Pillar of this family:’ San Antonio siblings remember sister who died in Alaska plane crash

Family members say Carol Mooers will be brought back to San Antonio and buried at Fort Sam Houston

SAN ANTONIO – A mother, wife, teacher and an army veteran — that’s how the family of Carol Mooers remembers her.

“She was just this beautiful, kind person,” said Sharon Florence, Mooers' sister.

San Antonio family said Mooers was one of the 10 victims killed in a small commuter plane crash in Alaska last week.

“It’s been horrific,” Florence said. “We were grateful that they found her and we were able to recover her.”

Mooers moved to Alaska three years ago as a contracted school counselor in Unalakleet. While her husband and two sons live in Maine, her roots are in San Antonio.

Mooers attended Incarnate Word High School and later graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

“She was presented with an opportunity to go to Alaska to help another underserved community ... My brother-in-law said that her eyes lit up when she told him about this opportunity that she had,” Florence said. “It meant taking time away from her family to go and do that ... She was really making a big impact.”

Before leaving San Antonio, Mooers worked as a teacher at Edgewood ISD and Harlandale ISD.

“She was fearless,” said Adrian Mendiola, Mooers' brother. “She never backed down from an opportunity.”

Her family confirmed they’re planning to bring Mooers' body back to San Antonio. They want to bury her at Fort Sam Houston.

“She impacted people across the country,” Mendiola said. “That it was in her DNA.”
