The NAEP is administered in reading and math for a sample of fourth and eighth grade students every two years in every state.

Fourth grade

Overall, Texas is down in testing. The exception comes from fourth graders, who are performing better than the national average in mathematics. Texas is ranked eighth with 241 points on the scale. In 2022, the state was ranked 14th with 239 points.

Fourth graders saw a two-point decline in reading. In 2022, Texas was ranked 33rd with 214 points. In 2024, the state ranked 37th in the country with 212 points.

Eighth grade

Eighth grade reading and math declined as well.

Eighth grade readers ranked 44th in 2024 with 252 points, while in 2022, they ranked 41st with 255 points.

As for math, this is where the biggest drop was seen. In 2022, eighth grade Texas students ranked 25th in the country with 273 points. In 2024, they dropped to 34th with 269 points.

“The latest NAEP results confirm what yearly STAAR assessments have been telling us for all Texas students, pandemic-induced learning gaps remain,” said Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath. “Intensive supports for our students and more tools to support parents will be needed to help our students achieve at higher levels.”
