SAN ANTONIO – Texas' Safe Haven Law, also known as the Baby Moses Law, allows parents who are unable to care for their children to take them to a designated safe space.
The Baby Moses Law states that a baby can be surrendered with no questions asked, only if the baby is:

- Within 60 days old.
- Handed off at a fire station, hospital, or stand-alone EMS building.
- Unharmed.
The Texas law states birth parents need to give their baby to an employee, but in San Antonio, parents have the option to surrender their child at designated safe spots that have special “Baby Boxes” on site.
The boxes, rigged with alarms to alert medical professionals, allow the birth parents to leave a child safely without face-to-face interaction.
The City of San Antonio’s proposed budget for FY 2024 included $438,000 to install 12 of the boxes at San Antonio fire stations.
After they are surrendered, babies may be taken to a hospital to receive any medical attention they need.
According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, parents who leave their unharmed infant at a “Safe Haven,” will not be prosecuted for abandonment or neglect.
