The San Antonio Police Department said officers found the suspect, a 41-year-old man, lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced dead.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the suspect as 41-year-old Jay Morales.

Police said the other man, 46, was detained and was not injured in the shooting.

SAPD said both men engaged in a verbal altercation while driving, which escalated as they followed each other.

Morales stopped his vehicle and opened his trunk. The other man saw him holding a firearm, police said.

In response, the 46-year-old man, who also had a firearm, fired at Morales, striking him multiple times.

A firearm was also found on Morales. The other man’s firearm was recovered at the scene as well, police said.

The man who shot Morales is cooperating with SAPD’s investigation, which remains ongoing.

Authorities are working to determine whether the victim acted in self-defense.
