Medical examiner’s office identifies man, 85, killed in house fire on South Side

It is unclear how fire started, fire officials say

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a man killed in a house fire on the South Side.

Robert Gonzalez, 85, was pronounced dead at the scene after the San Antonio Fire Department found him in a bedroom inside the home, fire officials said.

According to the medical examiner’s office, Gonzalez’s cause and manner of death are still under investigation.

Fire crews responded to the fire in the 500 block of Schley Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

An SAFD commander said in a briefing that the fire had likely started in the back of the home.

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control within approximately 15 minutes.

It’s unclear what caused the fire. SAFD said its arson and fire investigators were working to determine it.

An exact estimate of damages was unclear, but SAFD said it was significant.
