Legacy Middle School student selected to represent Texas in nationwide math competition

East Central ISD seventh grader paves the way for visually impaired students

SAN ANTONIO – Fabian Rodriguez, 12, is a Legacy Middle School seventh grader.

Rodriguez is a quiet person both in and outside of the classroom, but he’s never shied away from math.

The seventh grader made a name for himself when he was selected to compete in the National American Printing House Abacus Bee for students with visual impairments.

Vanessa Perkins has assisted Rodriguez with math while being visually impaired using an abacus. The abacus is a tool used to add, subtract, multiply and other basic mathematical equations.

“He just has a good math brain,” Perkins said. “Fabian can braille himself the problems that the teacher presents to him in class.”

Fabian is heading to a nationwide math competition in Kentucky to represent the state of Texas in March.
