SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio community has multiple events scheduled leading up to the 38th Martin Luther King Jr. March and Celebration on Monday, Jan. 20th at 10 a.m.
The celebration begins with several events the days before, starting Friday at 7 p.m. with the New Baptist Ministers' Union MLK Worship Service at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 1001 N Walters St.
Teens have their day on Saturday, Jan. 18th with the MLK Youth Empowerment Summit at St. Phillips College. Pre-registered participants will receive a special Spurs-related surprise. The event starts at 9 a.m. and will include food and games with a special focus on aviation and aerospace.
The MLK Wreath-Laying Ceremony will take place on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at Martin Luther King Plaza on N New Braunfels and E Houston Street.
Later that day, the 38th annual MLK Citywide Interfaith Worship Service will take place at 4:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
The MLK pre-march early morning worship program will take place at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20 at 3501 Martin Luther King Drive. Participants are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the San Antonio Food Bank.
The march starts at 10 a.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Academy. The 2.5-mile walk will end at the Pittman-Sullivan Park around noon.
This year, QR codes can be found along the route to donate to the MLK Scholarship Foundation, which benefits local students. Participants can also upload pictures from the event to be sent to the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum.
