SAN ANTONIO – A Friday afternoon fire at an apartment complex on Jackson Keller Road left 26 people displaced from their homes and belongings.
A woman who KSAT spoke with on Friday evening said she saw the smoke coming from the building as she was leaving her home to get groceries.
“I live by myself with my cat, so I was definitely afraid that somehow, maybe, the fire would spread,” the woman said.
On Saturday, Robert Webb returned to building 13, where the fire happened, to retrieve his belongings. He said he was asleep when the fire started.
“My cousin woke me up,” Webb said. “I saw everyone, and the fire department and the police department kicking doors in to get people out.”
Webb and all the other residents made it out of the building alive, and no one was injured, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.
However, Webb said it’s been difficult trying to figure out what’s next.
“Management started to board up the units that were vacated,” Webb said. “I wasn’t really given any prior notice besides me pulling up about an hour ago to find out that everything that’s in the unit’s going to be unavailable for us to access until the city deems it safe for us to go back in and grab our stuff.”
Webb said the apartment complex is offering units to people in the affected building, but getting any salvageable belongings out of homes is what they’re hoping for now.
“It’s just a pain not being able to grab your stuff and being put in a hard situation where even if you’re relocating to another unit, you have nothing to take with you,” Webb said.
KSAT went to the leasing office just after learning this information to gather additional details, but the office closed at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
While no one was injured in the fire, some of the people displaced included children, pets, and an older man and woman.
