1-year-old girl critically injured in crash at Montessori school in NW Bexar County has died, her father says

Five children at playground were hospitalized after a vehicle drove through fence

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A 1-year-old girl who was critically injured in a Dec. 19, 2024, crash at the Excelled Montessori Plus School on the northwest side of Bexar County has died.

Pibo Amrani, the father of 1-year-old Mkaya, confirmed her death to KSAT on Jan. 2, 2025.

The crash happened just after 4:15 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2024, in the 27500 block of Interstate 10 near Fair Oaks Ranch Parkway.

During a Dec. 19, 2024, news conference, Bexar County Sheriff Salazar said the crash happened while parents were picking up their kids after a holiday performance.

After a parent loaded her kids into a vehicle, she accelerated into another car, ramming both vehicles through a fence.

The teacher and the group of children were in a playground on the other side of the fence, and they were pinned under the car, Salazar said.

On Dec. 19, 2024, Salazar said the five children were taken to the hospital. At this time, the condition of the four other children is unknown.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the identity of the teacher who was killed in the crash on Dec. 20, 2024.

She was identified as Alexia Rosales, 22.

The children were all around the age of one, BCSO said on Dec. 20, 2024. Another adult woman, 23, was taken to the hospital for injuries.

A fire chief with the Bexar County Emergency Services District 4 said in an email to KSAT that on top of those transported to the hospital, one adult and two children were treated and released on the scene.

According to a spokeswoman representing the school, another teacher was also injured in the crash and was taken to a local hospital.

The driver who caused the crash may have a medical history that could have led to the crash, Salazar said on Dec. 19, 2024. She was not believed to be intoxicated.

On the day of the crash, Salazar said that it is unclear if any charges will be filed against the driver at this time.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that its “investigation remains ongoing,” but no new updates were shared.

In a statement to KSAT, Amrani said he is thankful for everyone’s prayers and vows to continue to fight for justice.
