Get Fit for Free: Explore San Antonio’s Year-Round Fitness in the Park

Over 70,000 people participate in these free programs each year.

San Antonio – The annual average gym membership cost is going up, reaching nearly $60.

The US Health and Fitness Consumer Report shows an increase in the number of new members by 37%, most attending an average of 75 days a year. Hispanics make up the group that grows the membership.

But really, getting in shape does not have to cost people a membership. The City of San Antonio Fitness in the Park has over 50 locations where free classes are offered.

Mike Kaye with the City of San Antonio said over 70,000 people participate in these free programs each year.

“Fitness in the Park is a free year-round exercise program that brings a variety of indoor and outdoor classes to a park near you. Everything’s 100% free. All you have to do (is) find a class on our schedule, come show up, and have fun,” Kaye said.

January is a popular time of the year for people to attend. But since the program runs year-round, anytime is a good time to join.

Some of our higher attended ones are going to be those Aqua Fitness. Aqua Zumba is big, Zumba is great, and some of our boot camps do really well," Kaye said. There are a lot of trending classes too, Aqua Combat, Aqua Zumba and Aqua Fitness Boards are popular.
