As Texas drivers adjust to a new law eliminating vehicle safety inspections in 2025, air travelers should also be aware of a new requirement taking effect this spring.
The deadline for Real ID compliance is May 7, 2025, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
A Real ID is needed to board a domestic flight. The deadline was pushed back several times due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In December 2022, authorities announced May 7, 2025, as the new deadline following several delays.
>> New Texas laws going into effect on Jan. 1, 2025
As the deadline approaches, people are encouraged to visit their state driver’s license offices to complete the process.
Why it matters
A Real ID will be required to board a domestic flight for travelers 18 and older once the deadline has passed.
To obtain a Real ID, people must prove their age, identity, Social Security number, and address. Requirements may vary depending on whether they get a driver’s license or an identification card.
Real IDs will have a star in the upper-right corner and are made of tamper-resistant polycarbonate material.
Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 to set security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and IDs in accordance with the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation.
