These San Antonio businesses were affected by layoffs in 2024

So far, in 2024, 1,279 layoffs have hit local businesses

SAN ANTONIO – Businesses across San Antonio experienced a fair share of closures, reimaginations, and, rather unfortunately, layoffs this year.

In 2023, there were 2,215 layoffs across Bexar County. Comparatively, 2024 has seen 1,279 layoffs so far, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice data from the Texas Workforce Commission.

WARN notices, a federal law, require businesses to provide advance notice to employees regarding closures or layoffs.

The first bout of layoffs in San Antonio came with a WARN notice issued on Jan. 5, 2024, to the Technica Corporation; 60 jobs were affected.

Technica Corporation, a Virginia-based cybersecurity firm, held offices at Port San Antonio, according to reporting by the San Antonio Business Journal.

Three companies in San Antonio had the most layoffs at one time, according to WARN data.

  • ABM Industries’ Flowers Baking Company issued 176 notices on Jan. 9.
  • SDH Services East LLC issued 166 notices on Nov. 25
  • Bimbo Bakeries issued 138 notices on July 26.

Bimbo Bakeries closed its East Side location in October as a result of the layoffs.

In April, budget retailer 99 Cents Only announced intentions to declare for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. WARN notices were issued in June; five stores in San Antonio issued 20 layoffs each.

The Associated Press reported that some 200 stores from Texas to California would reopen as Dollar Tree locations after the leases were secured from bankruptcy proceedings.

It is unclear if the affected employees in San Antonio would be offered positions with Dollar Tree.

  • 57 from Quality Custom Distribution on July 25
  • 57 from Hill Mission Technologies on June 20
  • 50 from Coach USA (Kerrville Bus Company) on June 12
  • 108 from Joyson Safety Systems on April 17
  • 73 from Kroger Fulfillment Network LLC on March 27
  • 65 from WFS Express Inc. on Feb. 12
