SAN ANTONIO – Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio and Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity built 64 homes for families in the San Antonio area throughout 2024.
The San Antonio nonprofit said it wants to look at expanding that number even more in 2025.
“We had wanted to do 63 this year, so we were able to beat that goal by one. So we’re just so blessed that the San Antonio community is involved and has helped us out”, said Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio’s Vice President Stephanie Wiese.
The nonprofit organization said that throughout 2024, rising construction costs and inflation have hurt the home-building industry. Wiese said they were able to combat that by buying in bulk and relying on its warehouse purchased 30 years ago.
Each family moving into a house must put in at least 300 hours of “sweat equity” and attend home ownership education meetings.
“It works because they work. They work hard. They’re trying to help themselves, trying to help their families,” said Wiese.
The three-four bedroom, two bath, 1300 square feet homes are meant to be a sustainable base for families in the area.
“Our families are going to buy these homes with a 0% interest rate,” Wiese said. “So, they’re not going to be paying the interest on the house. That’s what’s going to make it affordable to them.”
Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio said it’s always looking for families in need to apply to their housing program.
