14 years?! KSAT’s Justin Horne discusses his anniversary and path to GMSA meteorologist

From tornadoes to hurricanes and floods, Justin has covered it all

14 YEARS AT KSAT

This November marked my 14th anniversary at KSAT. It’s not an anniversary that usually stands out, but it does for me. It marks my first time as the GMSA meteorologist. Over the years, I learned so much from Mike Osterhage, who truly is one of the nicest guys around. Now, I hope to carry on the legacy of one of the top-rated morning shows in San Antonio.

MY HISTORY

One thing you may not know about me is that I started at KSAT in a unique role. Despite being a meteorologist, I technically began my KSAT tenure as a news reporter. My previous jobs included being a meteorologist and reporter in San Angelo, my hometown of Midland, and Houston. The reason: KSAT needed a backup meteorologist, but someone who could cover local environmental stories, too.

Being the nerd that I am, I love covering water stories, going caving and understanding the world around me. It was a perfect marriage! I soon graduated to GMSA weekend meteorologist. That eventually led to me becoming the 9 a.m. and noon meteorologist, and now doing GMSA weather.

WHAT I’VE SEEN

How much time you got? Since I arrived at KSAT, I’ve covered multiple hurricanes, the winter storms of all winter storms, tornadoes, massive hail, earthquakes, eclipses, floods, and everything in between. What stands out?

The 2015 Wimberley floods had quite the effect on me. I remember questioning the sensor along the Blanco River when it showed a 30-foot rise. Sadly, it turned out to be accurate. The loss of life was devastating.

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey may have been the toughest assignment of my career. The destruction was immense and the duration of the event caused so much heartache along the Texas coast. Telling people’s stories was rewarding, but somber as well.

In 2021, the “Big Freeze” was an event that I’ll never forget. Working GMSA that morning, the tone of the show turned on a dime — going from “Yay, it’s snowing” to “We’ve got major problems.” It turned out to be a serious disaster that left a mark on San Antonio and Texas.

Outside of weather, I’ve also had the opportunity to fly in helicopters, travel to area towns to learn their history, and dive into the longest cave in Texas.

There are many other events and stories I could discuss, but I won’t bore you! All of this to say, these situations have molded me and I’d like to think they made me a much better meteorologist.

WHY I LOVE KSAT

The answer, in one word, is people. I promise you that I’m not just saying this... the KSAT weather team is the best. Adam, Sarah, and Mia are some of my favorite people in the world. Not only are they brilliant meteorologists, but just all-around good people. Then, there’s R.J., Japhanie, Patty, Alex, Devan, Steph, and the entire GMSA crew. I mean it when I say that they are truly amazing, kind people. We are good friends on and off-air. It makes work all that more enjoyable when you love the people you work with.

WHAT’S AHEAD

Look... I get it. Times are changing. Many folks have cut the cord or get the weather from a phone. Maybe you don’t even watch the news anymore. This is the world we live in. But, know that I and the KSAT weather team want to meet you where you are. I get to work at 2:45 a.m. and spend two hours not only prepping for GMSA but also updating the KSAT Weather app hour by hour. Each morning, I send a personalized forecast to your phone.

I also update our website with the latest forecasts. All of this is done by an actual KSAT meteorologist. Soon, you’ll also see us streaming even more weather content on all of KSAT’s platforms. Stay tuned!

SAY HI!

I run into so many KSAT viewers and streamers across San Antonio. Please feel free to say hello! This, for me, means job security. It lets me know that what I’m doing matters. My family and I love San Antonio and I’m blessed to call it home. My hope is to spend another 14 years here at KSAT.
